This teacher decides that he wants to learn how to create android applications with the computer programming knowledge that he has, and the things that he is able to develop will leave you breathless.
App development is what is in right now. By giving students the opportunity to develop software that works on their mobile devices, you are connecting with the students on their level. By high school, most students have phones already, and the possibilities that arise when students are able to build apps that they can run on their phones are endless.
I spend a lot of time researching and practicing app development to see whether it is a viable option in a classroom. I wanted to do this because I think that it automatically sparks student interest because they can use anything that they create on their phone. I found that the software needed to build app's is still fairly new, and it has a lot of bugs in it. There were a lot of stages where I was fighting with the set up of android studio, rather than fighting through the code.
But once everything was set up, it made creating an app very possible. The drag and drop screen meny was impressive, and the options were enormous. Students could spend an entire course creating apps using android studio, and not see everything. I think that it is an option worth considering for your classrooom.
